Look, Smell and Hear Your Way to a Safer Car

Many of us ignore the odd rattling noses or smells coming from our vehicles. The problem is that these are usually the sign a more serious issue. Here are a few of the warning signs your vehicle might be giving you and what they could mean.

Sight:

symptom: Vehicle is leaning to one sign
diagnosis: Could be an indication of a broken spring

symptom: Puddles underneath your vehicle
diagnosis: Leaking coolant or oil

Smell:

symptom: Turn on heater and it smells sweet
diagnosis: This is a possible leaking heater core

symptom: Turn on heater and it stinks
diagnosis: High chance that there is mildew or mold build up

symptom: A burning smell coming from your vehicle is never a good sign
diagnosis: Oil could be leaking into engine, brakes may be sticking or possibly wires are overheating and melting

Hear:

Texting and Driving

It is against the law in Connecticut and Massachusetts to text while driving. Since this info-graph (see above image) came out 11 more states have added this law to their books making a total of 30. The Governors Highway Safety Association has a great information on each state and their laws regarding cell phones.

51.4% of teenagers admitted to texting while driving and 45.1% of 20-24 year olds. Just by talking on the phone you are 4 times more likely to cause an accident which is equivalent to your chances when driving drunk (.08 BAC). The scary part? You are 8 times more likely to cause an accident texting.

2012 Ford Focus Awesome MPG!

It has bee confirmed! The 2012 Ford Focus achieved an EPA-rated 40 mpg on highway driving on their SE sedan. This beats out much of the competition, with only the 2011 Hyundai Elantra and 2011 Cehvrolet Cruze Eco hitting that mark.

5 Tips to Conserve Gas and Save Money

With gas prices soaring in the last couple of months it is no wonder many of us shudder as we see our fuel tank near empty. Here are 5 tips from AAA to help you conserve gas:

Avoid making quick stops and starts. It has been reported that you can lower your fuel economy by 33% by driving aggressively.
As hard as it sounds, drive the speed limit.Your cars fuel economy is at its peak around 55 mph. That being said, every 5 mph driven over 60 is equivalent to paying an extra $0.24 per gallon.
Tires should be fully inflated. Having your tires inflated properly can increase fuel efficiency by 3%.
Avoid putting luggage on your roof. The vehicle becomes less aerodynamic creating extra drag and decreasing fuel economy.
Having your vehicle up-to-date on maintenance repairs will help you achieve maximum fuel economy. Also, do not ignore vehicle-warning indicators. These problems can be a major cause of poor fuel economy.

The Roads Look Like Swiss Cheese

We all have seen them and we have most definitely hit them, yes folks, it is pothole season again. The time of year when the roads look more like swiss cheese than pavement. So here are some tips from AAA and carjunky.com on how to prevent major damage to you vehicle.

Full air pressure in all your tires will add more cushion between the pothole and the rims.
SLOW DOWN when approaching a pothole if it cant be avoided. High speeds increase the chance of damaging tires, wheels, shocks, struts and springs.
Do Not brake directly over a pothole. The weight of the vehicle will shift forward onto the front wheels increasing damage.
Watch out for water and snow that may be concealing deep potholes.
All it takes is hitting one pothole to alter the alignment of your wheels. This will cause uneven tire wear and mean that they will need to be replaced sooner.

Take heed to these tips so you wont have to come in and visit our service center sooner than necessary. But, if you do hit a pothole it is important to get any damage fixed ASAP. With all the being said, drive carefully.

Brakes are probably one of the easiest repairs to understand if you know the right questions to ask.

Ask if you can go out to the shop and see the brakes.
Find out what pad thickness the brakes start out at when they are new.
Find out what the factory considers "zero lift left" or...

Brakes generally start out at 13mm in the front and 9mm in the rear

Usually the factory will discard brakes at 3mm in the front and 2mm in the rear.

If you know the size of a new brake pad and the size it is now, take your mileage now and divide by the mm used up and you will get a rough idea of how many miles you have left on your brake pads.

For instance, my front brake pads start out at a thickness of 13mm and right now, after 20,000 miles, are at 6mm. 20,000/(13-6)=2,857.14

You are estimating around 2,857 miles left on your brake pads.

Knowing these facts can help you understand why you need brakes, but the best advice I can give you is to ask to go out to the shop and look for yourself.

How to Jump Start a Car

No one wants to be caught with a dead battery, especially during the holiday season. Here are some tips on how to safely jump start your car without damaging the battery or starter.

It is possible for batteries to explode. Make sure you turn off both cars before you proceed.
Connect the positive cable end to the positive battery terminal of the dead battery.
Once that is complete connect the positive cable end to the positive end of the working battery.
Next connect the negative end of the cable to the negative terminal of the working battery.
Attach the remaining negative cable to the unpainted metal of the car engine (as far away from the battery as possible). The below image shows you what it will look like.

Now you just have to wait a few moments before you try to start your car. If it doesn’t start, start the working car and then try the dead one again.
When the car starts, make sure you disconnect the cables in the opposite order.
If your car still does not start, don’t continue to try to charge it. This could lead to damage of the car’s starter. You should take the battery to a service center to get it repaired.
If you are successful you should still make sure your car battery if fully recharged by hooking it up to a charger for the night. You can also drive for 5 or 10 miles.

Avoid Car Theft

I found an article on AOL autos that talks about how to prevent car theft. Considering holidays are the busiest time of year for car thieves, I thought I would repost some of the key points to help you keep your vehicle safe. The article is from 2009 but I feel that it still applies.
John Max, author of How to Screw Up a Car Thief's Day, states, "It takes less time for a professional thief to break into your car, start it up and drive away as it does for you to walk into a 7-11, plunk down three bucks for a bagel and coffee and emerge to watch your ride recede into the distance."

Park in Plain Site
Placing your car is plain site is a deterrent to most thieves, who are looking to not raise suspicion. Park your car in a well-lit, populated area and if there are cameras that is all the better.

Take your Keys
The worst thing you could do is leave your keys in the car. That is an open invitation for any thief (or friend wanting to play a practical joke). "Car theft is often a crime of opportunity, so shut yours off and pocket your keys even if you're only ducking into a convenience store."

Don't Hide your Keys Within or Outside the Vehicle
This is pretty self-explanatory. Trust me you are not clever enough to hide your keys in a place a thief won't find.

Make your Car Harder to Steal

Apply the emergency break
Turn the wheels hard to the left or right and place the car in park or gear.
Consider using a vehicle recovery device
Disable your battery during long term parking

I hope you take these into consideration in the future but keep in mind these are all just tips. If someone is intent on stealing your car there is a good chance they will.

Buying a car can be stressful experience, especially when you aren’t sure of the first step to take. I sat down with a General Manager from a store that rates incredibly high on satisfaction and asked him what someone can do to better prepare themselves for the process and what you should expect from a dealership.

Start by searching dealers in your area and seeing how past customers have rated them. Google Places and Yahoo! Local are definitely great options but you might want to try dealerrater.com which is specifically dedicated to, as the title suggests, rating automotive dealers. It is important to keep an open mind because as many of us know it is impossible to satisfy everyone. If you do find a legitimate complaint see how the dealership responded them, if at all.
If you have a trade-in find out how much money you still owe on it. Also do some research to find out how much your vehicle is worth. Autotrader.com has a new feature called the trade-in marketplace. All you have to do is simply click on the Autotrader logo and enter your zip code and vehicle information. You'll receive a fast, free and guaranteed value for your car within minutes. Bring your offer to one of the dealerships they provide and even if you aren't going to buy from them, they'll still write you a check for your vehicle. They could even possibly offer you more for your vehicle.
Do research on the car you want but not only on the car you want, the equipment and packages that are important to you. For instance, perhaps you love leather seats but couldn’t care less if they were powered. You can save a lot of money by opting out of power seating and other similar functions. Not only that but consider going for an older model, right now a new 2010 has better incentives and value than a new 2011.
When you are given a quote, watch out for incentives and rebates. Most dealers will include all incentives and rebates in their discounted price, many of which you might not be eligible for. Usually there is fine print underneath however, be aware of dealerships that hide disclaimers on separate pages. If you are receiving a quote via email just ask what the incentives are. Often, you will find there is an incentive for college grads or military personnel and you might be neither. Remember, discounted prices usually don’t include things like sales tax and registration fees.
When you are at the dealership if you feel like you are being pressured into a specific car there could be several reasons. For example, the dealership will make more money if you buy one verse another or it has been on the lot for a while and they want to get rid of it.

The main thing with purchasing a vehicle is knowledge. Make sure to do your research. If you aren’t sure which car you want go to a dealership where you know you won’t be pressured to purchase and test drive a few. Then start exploring what options are out there. With the internet at your fingers there is a limitless amount of information you can find and I hope this helps you get started.

ü 9% of tires on the road are bald.*
ü A tire can lose as much as 50% of its inflation pressure and not appear to be flat.
ü Inflation pressure in a tire goes up (in warm weather) and down (in cold weather) 1-2 pounds for every 10 degrees of temperature change.

Why Maintain Correct Pressure

Under inflation or overloading creates excessive stress and heat, and can lead to tire failure. This could result in vehicle damage and/or serious injury or death.

And over inflated tire can cause uneven wear in the center of the tread. Over inflation also can make the tire more susceptible to road hazard damage and pose vehicle handling issues.

Check Your Tire Pressure

· Check tire pressure once a month and before long journeys.

· When you check the inflation, make sure the tires are cool-meaning they are not hot even from driving a mile.

· Check your spare tire to make sure it has enough air.

· Check for nails and other objects embedded that could poke a hole in the tire and cause an air leak.

Denis Leary and Family Ford

On September 11, 2010 Denis Leary, star of FX’s show Rescue me, and his wife, Ann Leary, donated a Ford F-350 Super Duty to the Roxbury Ambulance Association. Mrs. Leary is an active volunteer for the association and Denis Leary established The Leary Firefighters Foundation. The foundation was founded in 2000 in response to a tragic fire in Worcester, Massachusetts. The fire claimed the lives of Denis’ cousin, a childhood friend, and four other firefighters. Their mission is to provide funding and resources to Fire Departments to obtain the best available equipment, technology and training.

Denis Leary opted out of being paid for his advertising work with Ford in exchange for a truck to be donated to the Roxbury Ambulance Association. Shakers Family Ford Lincoln Mercury felt privileged to be able to help the cause and arrange for the truck’s arrival. Corey Shaker, Dealer Principal for Shakers’ and volunteer fire fighter, pushed for the truck to arrive in time for September 11^th in order to commemorate the 343 fire fighters who gave their lives during the 9/11 tragedy.

The new truck will be replacing their 11 year old Chevy Suburban as the support and response vehicle in Roxbury. The truck is used to carry first responder supplies such as first aid kits, water, decontamination equipment and much more. The aid that this vehicle gives can help save lives.

Ford has released all the data on the new 2011 Ford Explorer that will be coming out this winter. You can check out a live chat with the chief engineer of the project and see how he responds to the questions put forth by consumers.

One of the most interesting aspects of the new Ford Explorer is the Terrain Management System. This system allows you to dial into a specific terrain to help optimize your cars performance. There are four possible options available for you to drive in. • Normal – biases torque to the front wheels and sends it to the rear only as needed • Mud/Ruts – switches the throttle to a more aggressive mode, limits upshifting and desensitizes stability control allowing the tires to spin as needed • Sand – the throttle throws maximum torque to the wheels, placing the transmission in lower gears for as long as possible, which allows the wheels to spin aggressively • Grass/Gravel/Snow – places the throttle in a setting to minimize wheel slip. If you are in the New England area or any other place it snows you know how helpful that Grass/Gravel/Snow function could be.

This SUV is also great for an active family or the college student with a lot of friends. It can hold up to 7 people in its roomy interior. There are three rows to help comfortably fit everyone you want. There is 21 cubic feet of cargo space but on top of that you can fold down the second and third row increasing cargo room to nearly 4 times that.

Ford adds the ability to Sync Google Maps directions to your Sync Traffic, Directions, and Information (TDI) equipped vehicle. Drivers will be able to look up directions on their home computers and beam the directions right to their vehicle. TDI enables vehicles without a full map navigation system in place to get around comfortably.

This solution will work on any Sync equipped vehicle but requires a phone with an internet connection to download the map routes to the vehicle. If technology keeps integrating at this rate, I'll be programming my laundry from my Ford Escape soon!

AppLink will be exclusive to the 2011 Ford Fiesta when it hits dealers later this year and, at launch, it will only work with Blackberry and Android-powered devices running SYNC software. 2011 Ford Mustang - A V6 Pace Car?!?!

The record breaking, fuel efficient, V6 Mustang I wrote about in my previous blog post, has been announced as the pace car for the Food Land 500 at the Bristol International Speedway. While most pace cars are usually the top of the line performance model (the Mustang GT paced a race in February), the extremely high marks the V6 Mustang has changed that.

Pushing 305 Horsepower and 31MPG, the 2011 V6 Mustang will certainly be the most fuel efficient vehicle on the track, and one of the most fuel efficient pace cars.

2012 Ford Police Interceptor

Ford is looking to take back it's reigns as the main vehicle used for police departments across america. Based on the new Ford Taurus, this new police interceptor looks to help Ford retain the 70% market share the Ford Crown Victoria holds.

Ford has taken into consideration the safety of police officers during the extreme situations they often find themselves in. The new interceptor will withstand rear end collisions of up to 75 MPH, the first police vehicle to meet the standard. The unibody design also has twice the durability of the Crown Victoria.

Should you find yourself on the wrong side of this interceptor the bench seats in the back now have more leg room, offering "passengers" a comfier ride, and the doors now open even wider. I would definetly much rather be in the driver's seat of one of those bad boys though!

Ford's new interceptor will be hitting the streets in late 2011, drive safe - you wouldn't want to see one of these in your rear view mirror!

The Ford Mustang V6... for decades has been the bane of of V8 owners everywhere, offering inexcusable performance in comparison to it's V8 brother, has been completely reborn for the 2011 model year.

The Mustang, in addition to it's exterior redesign, is also GREATLY increasing performance in the V6 version, up to 305 HP from 210 in 2010. WOW! FINALLY! It's been a long time coming, nearly fourty years, but the new DOHC 3.7L engine offers the performance a Mustang deserves. Fuel economy is also up with the new engine, roughly 3MPG more on the highway for the manual (18city/29highway) and greatly increased automatic mileage (19city/30+highway). With all that power, the V6 Mustang is getting quite the overhaul, with larger brakes (from the 2010 Mustang GT).

Dillinger's 1930 Ford Model A up for auction

The ORIGINAL 1930 Ford Model A John Dillinger used in a police chase has been placed on the Barret-Jackson auction block. Dillinger commandered the vehicle from Robert Johnson after he escaped the Melvin Pervus and the FBI in the Little Bohemia Lodge gun fight. While fleeing to Minnesota, Dillinger shot at pursuing law enforcement officers and dodge bullets from the rear window of this very vehicle.

After decades in storage, this vehicle was carefully restored by the makers of Public Enemies for the film, and was very much utilized. The restoration involved the filling of bullet holes, repainting, and putting new glass in the vehicle. The vehicle is new restored, and preserved forever on DVD and BLU-RAY. Who want's to buy it for me????

The Shaker's Family Makes Donation to Shakesperience Production

Waterbury - Shaker Auto Group has made a donation to Shakesperience Production that will help the company continue its mission to 'educate and inspire students, families and theater professionals' throughout New England.

The company's van has traveled more than 50,000 miles and helped deliver more than 3,000 performances and workshops since 2003.

This heavy use resulted in a bad ball-joint, the replacement of which is a very costly procedure for the company at this time.

Danielle Shaker, Shakersperience acting student, guest star and member of the Board of Directors, brought the problem to the attention of her husband, Corey Shaker, president of Shaker Auto Group.

As he took action to help, Mr. Shaker said of his wife, 'I have become aware of the arts, and therefore how important they are to our community. Because of her I have really enjoyed shows that I would not have seen.'

'As far as I am concerned, Shakersperience is a vital part of our community and therefore I would like to donate this work to do a small part to support this important part of Waterbury's culture.'

Besides its three, one-week Summer Acting Camps, Shakesperience will participate in summer camps for Waterbury Parks and Recreation, the Milford Fine Arts Council and the Mattatuck Museum, and will perform both 'Hamlet' and 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' at the Stratford Arts Festival Friday and Saturday, August 28 and 29.

'With that schedule,' said Executive Director Jeffery Lapham, 'the problem with the van could have caused some real issues for us this summer. We are thankful to Shaker Auto Group for their generosity.'

Ford Fusion won the Comparison Test: Accord vs Malibu vs Fusion vs Mazda6 vs Sonata - From Edmunds.com

Edmunds.com just ran a comparions test among the 5 best-selling family sedans. With no doubt, the 2010 Ford Fusion won the top place! It beat the Chevy Malibu, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata and the Mazda6.

1st Place: 2010 Ford Fusion SportAs-Tested Price: $29,545

Where it Follows:

Throw on a better set of tires and that "fun to drive" category could've turned out differently. The 2010 Ford Fusion Sport feels like an immensely capable car until you head into that first turn, hear the Goodyear tires scream and feel the car struggle to grip the pavement. Of course, a grippier set of rubber may have hurt the Fusion's test-leading ride comfort and road noise scores, but if you're looking to maximize the Sport's handling potential, a trip to Tire Rack is in order.

There were other minor shortcomings. The tightly constructed interior has the best materials in this test, but the overall look is a bit stark despite the contrasting stitching and snazzy gauges. The Sport's available red or blue color schemes would have brightened things up. Like the Accord, the Fusion had lots of little buttons on its center stack, and the climate controls are mounted too low on the dash.

Where it Leads:

This really wasn't close. The Ford Fusion Sport scored either first or second in every subjective scoring category, barely trailed the Mazda for top features score and was picked by all but one editor as the sedan we'd most frequently recommend to consumers -- all while being only the third-most expensive car in the test. In those categories it didn't win, the Fusion was always close to the victor.

We know what you're going to say: "Of course the Sport model wins a comparison test, you people love fun cars." We do, but the truth is, the Sport isn't that sporty. Despite its sport-tuned suspension, it had the best ride in the test, it was the quietest (in terms of both wind and road noise), and it had a large back seat that didn't trail the Accord's by much. The Fusion had the most comfortable front seats (although they can pinch the shoulder blades of taller or long-torsoed occupants), which are actually shared with the sedate Hybrid model. The driving position was friendliest for the widest array of driver sizes, and long distances passed by with the greatest comfort. The Sync electronics interface is becoming a beloved feature, and the rearview camera was unique in this test. The Sport's hydraulic power steering is tactile and nicely weighted at speed, yet sufficiently light for parking maneuvers (the non-Sport Fusions have less communicative electric power steering).

The Ford Fusion is a wonderfully well-rounded automobile. The Sport is simply its best version, offering an ideal ride/handling balance that is comfortable enough for the average buyer, but sporty enough for enthusiasts. It is also the only way to get the 263-horsepower V6 as opposed to the SE and SEL's 240-hp mill (both V6s return equal fuel economy). Despite its advantages, though, the Sport costs $1,145 more than a similarly equipped SEL, but we think it's worth it. Yet, even if you'd rather save the cash with an SEL, we're convinced the Fusion would still emerge victorious. How about that, folks: the best family sedan can now be found at a Ford dealership.

Best for: The majority of family sedan shoppers, iPod and cell phone addicts.

Parents Magazine and Edmunds.com Announce The 15 Best Family Cars Of 2009 - Ford Flex is on the list!

New York, NY (May 19, 2009) — Parents magazine and Edmunds.com today revealed their annual list of Best Family Cars. Having tested essentially every vehicle in the marketplace, the experts selected 15 top models — three each in the budget, crossover, minivan, sedan and SUV categories. Each car was judged on safety, performance, interior, exterior and family friendly features.

In addition to analyzing, test-driving, and comparing specs, Parents/Edmunds.com took into account feedback from parents who own and drive these vehicles every day. All of the cars on the list are budget friendly — five start at under $20,000 and one checks in at under $15,000. According to the Parents/Edmunds.com survey, the 15 Best Family Cars are:

According to the Parents/Edmunds.com Best Family Cars research, superior handling, efficient gas mileage and easy car seat installation are all "must haves" for parent drivers. The extras that won rave reviews from parents were storage related features, including bins under seats, easy to reach compartments in the dash and cup holders in the back seats. Remote start capability and multiple electronic plugs for portable electronics also impressed the reviewers and owners of the models on the Best Family Cars list.

"There are 340 new car models on sale this year, and busy families could undoubtedly use some help sorting through the choices to decide what is right for them," stated Edmunds.com editor-in-chief Karl Brauer. "As a parent myself, I feel sure that just about any family can find a car on this list that will serve their purposes well."

Motortrend just posted an analysis of the biggest winners of the U.S. auto sales in June, 2009. To no one's surprise, Ford is the biggest winner for manufacturer and for brand! We are proud of our relationship with Ford.

The Blue Oval was, to no one's surprise, the success story of June 2009. Ford sold 148,153 vehicles last month, and though that wasn't quite as many as larger rival GM, it was good enough to post a final sales number down only 11% over 2008. In fact, those sales were also good enough to earn Ford an extra 3% market share.

Biggest Winner - Brand: Ford

Another win here for the Blue Oval boys. Not only was Ford the top-selling brand at the Ford Motor Company, it was the top-selling brand of any of the Detroit brands and it posted the smallest decline from 2008, which is about as much as any automaker can hope for these days. The Ford brand carried Ford Motor Company, selling 133,684 vehicles in June and posting a decline of just 8.3% over June 2008.

President Obama signed into law a program NHTSA is calling the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), also known as the 'Cash For Clunkers' program. This is a government program that helps you purchase a new, more fuel efficient vehicle when you trade in a less fuel efficient vehicle. Your old gas-guzzler could worth up to $4,500 when traded in for a fuel-efficient new vehicle!

Family Ford just became a participated 'cash for clunkers' dealership. Please stay tuned formore details. Issuance will occur around July 23, 2009.

Important Things to Know:

Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date.
Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify.
Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)
Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in
You don't need a voucher, dealers will apply a credit at purchase
Program runs through Nov 1, 2009 or when the funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.
The vehicle that you are trading in is required to be destroyed. Therefore, the value you negotiate with the dealer for your trade in is not likely to exceed its scrap value. The law requires the dealer to disclose to you and estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in vehicle.
